Late August always drums up memories of going back to school as a kid. Freshly sharpened pencils, new classes, fresh outfits…and a chance for the adults to regain their freedom and enjoy a private slice of summer. Our latest Brewmaster’s Reserve release is Red Sumac Wit, a beer brewed just for that time of the year. As the oppressive heat of the dog days begins to lift and the first hints of fall air curl through the night, a tart, citrusy witbier is just what you need.
Just because you’re not in school doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a little history lesson, especially when it’s in your glass already. Red sumac has been used as a spice since ancient times, praised as much for its medicinal powers as its zingy, lemon-like flavors. Treasure ships often measured most of their value in spices, and red sumac was at the top of the list from traders worldwide. Today we know it for its powerful antioxidants, soothing properties, and that unbeatable tangy flavor. It makes perfect sense to join it up with springy wheat to make a refreshing, warm-weather beer.
As with all of our Brewmaster’s Reserve beers, Red Sumac Wit is only available on draft, and will only be around for a short time. Check out what Brewmaster Garrett Oliver has to say about the beer on our Beers Page, then get out their and find your source.
