Whether you’re a fan of goth-punk or you have a migraine-induced sensitivity to light, this April 14 event is for you. Right here within the Brewery confines, we’ll be paying homage to the old Hindy warehouse parties of yore, with unlimited taps of some of our darkest beers (Dry Irish Stout and current Brewmaster’s Reserve Mary’s Maple Porter) as well as a midnight tasting of the eternally-dark vintage Black Chocolate Stout. Oh, and if it isn’t clear yet, the theme of this particular get-together is darkness, so come dressed in dark attire and get ready to dance to the seriously dark dance tunes of DJ Seek10. Tickets are $20; you can get yours by clicking on the button below.

You’re probably like “What? Did I read that right?”. Don’t worry, you did. Good job! Claire, our extraordinaire Export Coordinator, will explain:

Friday nights at the Brooklyn Brewery are typically full of good times and great people but recently we had some very special visitors. An a’cappella Choir of 24 girls from Iceland called Graduale Nobili (@gradualenobili) who just so happen to be on tour with Bjork, offered to sing us a few songs in exchange for beer and pizza. Harmoniously and flawlessly they sang their National Anthem, their impressive rendition of the Flight of the Bumble Bee, and an upbeat song that translates to a man in red destroying a village with his scythe. They were even kind enough to humor us by singing the anthem of our cask beer club, The Legion of Osiris. It was an honor that they decided to spend their night off from Bjork’s Biophilia tour with us.

Watch as Graduale Nobili graciously supports us on The Anthem of The Legion of Osiris, followed by a performance of “Raudi Riddarinn (The Red Knight)”. Below the video are the song’s upbeat, sunny lyrics.

No one is so solitary that he cannot expect a visitor, a horseman all in red riding a pale steed
A horseman all in red wielding a reeking scythe gallops so the clatter of hooves resounds around the world
Swirling up dust that darkens the world of men and spatters on the windows
The horseman forces his way into the house and his sickle drips with blood

Needless to say, I’m not surprised that one of the world’s foremost songwriters drew inspiration from felines, and can only surmise that Yoko was a dog lover. Paul, too. Come to think of it, was this the rift that broke up the Beatles? I’m going to say yes, definitely.

Bonnaroo 2011 has come and gone, and with it so has another epic excursion to sunny Tennessee in celebration of music, art and beer. We braved the heat — and over 80,000 people — to enjoy the songsmithings of Eminem, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Buffalo Springfield, My Morning Jacket, Lil Wayne, Bassnectar, Girl Talk, Primus, Dr. John & The Meters, Gogol Bordello, Ratatat, Deerhunter, Devotchka, Best Coast, The Sword, Twin Shadow, The Walkmen, Phosphorescent and many, many more.

And of course there was beer. Under the delicious shade of the “Brooer’s Tent” we poured refreshing cups of Brooklyn Summer Ale and Brooklyner Weisse, gave away merch and made new friends from near and afar.
Local X Local :: Celebrating The Best In Locally Brewed Music, Arts, Media… And Beer!

Celebrate the release of Cheeseburger’s album, ANOTHER NIGHT DOWN THE DRAIN and catch an all-new episode of Adult Swim’s Superjail! with cast & crew members, plus other special guests, following the show.

Total mayhem”…”complete chaos”…”goofy”…”real-deal rock,” these are all ways Cheeseburger’s music and live shows have been described and they are all spot on. This isn’t a band concerned with rules or expectations they just want to rock and rock is what they do. Another Big Night Down The Drain is their second studio recording and first release on Williams Street Records. The new album has a bigger sound, but the same riff-heavy garage punk vibe that channels the likes and fervor of The Stooges and The Dickies with a dash of a tripped-out comedic GG Allin. Music from this release will be featured in Season 2 of Superjail! – on the air April 3rd.

“Rather than copy some Mötley Crüe cliché and wind up sounding like Jet or Lous XIV, Cheeseburger toy with rock archetypes the way a big cat teases its prey.”
We had a blast at the Pitchork #Offline showcases on Thursday and Friday at East Side Drive In, and TV on The Radio, Okkervil River, The Dodos and OFF! were just a few of the great performances we witnessed across in Austin (not to mention a surprise appearance by LL Cool J); musicians from around the world played dozens of genres from venues including bars, clubs, alleyways, parking lots, backyards, fields and the city’s sidewalks. We ate deep fried bacon wrapped pickles, pulled pork sliders with fried onions, Canadian bacon jalapeño-jelly donuts, and frightening amounts of smoked meat off the bone. We drank and shared a great slew of Brooklyn Lager and EIPA, and were introduced to some fantastic local breweries including the (512) Brewing Company and Real Ale Brewing Company. All of this is to say SxSW 2011 was a great success.

Speaking of winning, Austinite Elizabeth Meador was the winner of a brand new, beautifully crafted Brooklyn Brewery skateboard by Bustin Boards at the Friday Pitchfork #Offline show. Cheers, Liz!

From Brooklyn Bowl:

Local x Local is Brooklyn Bowl’s free monthly show series that celebrates the best in Brooklyn’s local art & music community.

In August 2006, Dylan Rau (vocals/guitar) brought together Ted Feldman (guitar), Val Loper (bass) and TJ Orscher (drums) in a small NYC practice space. The original plan was to flesh out some demos Rau had been working on but each quickly saw and heard the potential for a band; a band that would be unique sounding yet widely accessible.
Focusing on the rhythm and percussion that Orscher and Loper bring, they strive to bring the driving beat to the foreground and to marry it with the contemplative lyrics of Rau and inventive guitar lines of Feldman. This musical creativity combines and combats ideas set forth by pioneers of the rock genre.

Press has been off the hook for their debut 4 song ep “Golden” which was produced by Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Pelican) and for their live shows. During their many gigs on the East Coast Bear Hands have been fortunate enough to share the stage with bands such as MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot, Ambulance Ltd, The Honorary Title etc.

$4 Brooklyn Brewery Lagers from 7PM-11PM!

With lots of local treats by:
Brooklyn Bowl
Brooklyn, NY 11211
FREE

As proof that all we want is for you to be happy, The Brooklyn Brewery’s free live music series continues at Brooklyn Bowl on December 19. This is the last LOCAL x LOCAL of 2010, featuring music from Real Estate, chips and artisanal salsa from The Brooklyn Salsa Company, and $4 Brooklyn Lager. So come on by. Your ears and mouth will be thanking you for days.

From Brooklyn Bowl:

Real Estate were born in the depths of one New Jersey summer. Frontman Martin Courtney had just returned home to his native Ridgewood from college in Washington State, a few fresh songs in his pockets. He’d been playing music with bassist Alex Bleeker and guitarist Matthew Mondanile since high school in various forms, even covering Weezer and the Strokes records from tip to tail. But during the summer of 2008, Real Estate didn’t get nostalgic for just their specific suburban nights, crushes, or favorite bands as teens– they fashioned a tin can-and-string to memories more universal. Their self-titled debut LP is a collection of those first underwater pop songs and onward, 7″ cuts and mpfrees that have been backstroking their way across the Web and into lo-fi nerdpiles. Over the past year, many of these songs have soundtracked a time when it feels like every kid in or just out of college seems to be handcrafting/clamoring for music that shuttles us back to a time before career choices, adult responsibility, and this recession.

Brooklyn Brewery presents then next installment of our all-Brooklyn-all-the-time monthly music series at Brooklyn Bowl. This Sunday we’re bringing the buzzy lo-fi garage poppers Beach Fossils to the stage for free and $4 pints of Brooklyn. You should come.

From BrooklynBowl.com

Beach Fossils, a band whose reverb-slicked indie pop compares favorably to acts like Surfer Blood, Best Coast and the Drums, formed in 2009 as a vehicle for the solo recordings of Dustin Payseur. Bassist John Pena and guitarist Christopher Burke were brought into Beach Fossils’ lineup later that year, after Payseur had single-handedly put together the recordings that would comprise the group’s first album. Beach Fossils’ debut 7″ single, Daydream/Desert Sand, was released on Captured Tracks in February 2010; their self-titled album was released on the same label later that year.

As always, Local X Local promises local music, beer and food. And bowling too.

Brooklyn Brewery Presents: Local X Local celebrates the Best In locally-brewed Music, Arts, Media… And Beer, of course. Once a month for the rest of the year we’ll be presenting a free show at our next door neighbor’s, Brooklyn Bowl.

Maluca is the latest addition to the New York dance scene. Maluca, which means “crazy girl” in Portuguese, is the moniker for 27 year-old Natalie Yepez, born and raised in New York City. Yepez, who was discovered by Diplo while performing karaokee, is the latest addition to the famed DJ’s label Mad Decent, where she joins the ranks of fellow genre-benders M.I.A. and Santigold. What distinguishes Maluca, though, is her own latin-influenced “ghettotech” and fashion flare.

Blue Ribbon MS Charity Bike Benefit

Riding on the coattails of September’s LXL is a worthy cause — the Blue Ribbon MS Charity Bike Benefit. Bromberg Brothers’ Blue Ribbon Restaurants, a restaurant group headquartered in New York City, will donate to its employees 160 new Cannondale Quick recreational bicycles on September 19, 2010. The new bikes will be ridden by Blue Ribbon employees as part of the company’s 200 plus member “Blue Ribbon Restaurants/Naked Nuggets Charity Bike Team” participating as a “Top-Tier Team” in the upcoming National MS Society’s “Bike MS NYC” Event on October 3rd, 2010. The new bikes are part of the company’s efforts to encourage health and wellness, greener business practices, and raise money for charity at the same time.
The bike donation event will include helmets and associated gear, safety instructions, helmet fittings and other assistance to Blue Ribbon employees provided by various sponsors including Cannondale, the NYC DOT, Bike New York, NYC Transportation Alternatives, the NYC – Southern Chapter of the National MS Society, Cycling Sports Group and The Bike Express/52 Division. The bike distribution will be followed by a fundraiser party at Brooklyn Bowl, NYC’s top Zagat-rated music venue, at 7-11 PM on September 19, 2010, at Brooklyn Bowl, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, including Local x Local, a Brooklyn based business organization.

“The Annual MS NYC charity ride was a major impetus in our decision to provide bikes to our employees,” said Eric Bromberg, chef and co-founder with brother Bruce of Bromberg Bros. Blue Ribbon. “Last year, many employees told us they could not ride with us in the 2009 MS ride because they did not have bikes. This year, we decided to solve that problem. We are working with Cannondale to provide each employee who needs one, a limited edition Blue Ribbon Cannondale “Quick” allowing them to not only participate in the ride, but keep the bike and commute and ride in comfort and style, and hopefully get outdoors and lead a more active lifestyle after the MS ride.”

Ruth Brenner, president of the NYC – Southern NY Chapter of the National MS Society said, “We’re excited Team Blue Ribbon/Naked Nuggets has joined the movement toward a world free of MS by participating in Bike MS NYC, and is providing this amazing opportunity for their employees. As one of our top fundraising teams, we’re grateful for Blue Ribbon’s commitment to our cause, and are thrilled they’re back for a second year!

For years now Brooklyn Brewery has been selling Lager in Israel and Turkey. Even before that, though, the story of Brooklyn Brewery really began in the Middle East, when founder Steve Hindy first picked up home brewing as a foreign correspondent for the AP. The Atlantic now reports that Steve’s success story of crafting good beer has inspired the Lebanese microbrewery 961.

From TheAtlantic.com

“One of the books (Mazen) Hajjar read, in the summer of 2006, was Beer School, an autobiography by Steve Hindy, the co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery. In the early 1980s, Hindy was a correspondent for the AP in Beirut, covering the civil war in Lebanon. (He later moved to Cairo, where he first encountered homebrewing, before graduating to the real thing back in New York.) More than anything, it was Hindy’s improbable tale, Hajjar says, that convinced him to try his hand at a homebrew. When he went to the States for the beer festival, Hajjar also scheduled a stop in Brooklyn, where he met his unwitting mentor.”

Every day, the human race places more of its trust in computers, and where exactly does that get us? Identity theft, fapping creeps behind every turn of the Chatroulette wheel, and a tangle of government-sponsored wires waiting for the day they can finally unleash the nuclear weapons. Before artificial intelligence can revolt, the VHS revivalists of the Found Footage Film Festival fire a shot at their would-be cybernetic oppressors, hosting a pre-SXSW party with the analog-friendly likes of synth-heads The Black And White Years, red-blooded honky-tonkers Mike And The Moonpies, and The Laughing, whose techno-tribalist triumph Fever has enough future-fret to kill all your iLust. DJ Jester The Filipino Fist makes musical juxtapositions the old fashioned way—on turntables—completing the sense that neither computers nor the Internet have done a lick of good for the evening’s acts. To win tickets to this event, e-mailrsvpaustin@theonion.com.

From The New York Times

The first summer concert at the Williamsburg waterfront this season will be epic, in at least one sense of the word: the reunited Faith No More will perform its first East Coast show in more than a decade on July 5 at North Eighth Street and Kent Avenue on the East River in Brooklyn, the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn said on Wednesday.

Faith No More, the San Francisco rock band whose hits included “Epic” and “A Small Victory,” broke up in the late 1990s but regrouped last year. In a statement, the band said it hoped “the experience of playing together again will yield results erratic and unpredictable enough to live up to the legacy of Faith No More.” (And yes, the front man Mike Patton is slated to be there.)

Tickets for the concert, which is being held as a benefit for the Open Space Alliance, will go on sale at noon on March 19 at ticketmaster.com and the Nokia Theater Times Square box office.
