In a beer-and-sports related wager entirely unrelated to our bets with Anchor and Harpoon, NY State Senator Charles E. Schumer swung by Brewers Row this morning to don a Manning jersey and boast his local beer.

Chuck has a Super Bowl bet going with the senators from Massachusetts where the “loser” will provide all the other senators a six-pack of beer from the winner’s state.

UPDATE // JAN 31 The Hill reports: According to Schumer’s office, if the Giants beat the Patriots, Shaheen will purchase beer from six of New York’s craft brew companies from around the state, including New York’s Brooklyn Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, Saranac Matt Brewing Company, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, Ithaca Beer Company, and Brown’s Brewing Company. Schumer plans to supply beer from New Hampshire’s Smuttynose Brewery to the entire Senate if he loses the bet.

“I can’t wait for Senator Shaheen to participate in the ‘I Love New York Brew’ Campaign by buying the best craft brews in New York and supplying them to every member of the United States Senate,” Schumer said in a statement released by his office. “When Big Blue brings Tom Brady and Bill Belichick to their knees, the entire U.S. Senate will understand why we love New York brew. Go Giants!”

And they’re being hatched here at The Brewery. Now in it’s 4th year (is that true?) the music and arts festival is starting a new wing called Ideas At Northside.

From TheLMagazine.com

As with every component of Northside, we’re aiming to showcase the most exciting, most creative endeavors being developed in Brooklyn — which isn’t just limited to art, it turns out. For every band or artist creating a new work, there seems to be an entrepreneur building a new business. Whether a “Creator” (band, artist) or an “Innovator” (developer, entrepreneur), the goal is the same: take an idea, turn it in to a brand, develop a community, and engage with your community.

New to Northside this year, the Ideas Festival will feature panels throughout Thursday and Sunday afternoon geared toward the “Creators” and “Innovators” defining what’s next in their social space and how the two groups intersect in doing so. Tickets are available for Northside Ideas at Ticketfly.

Brooklyn Brewery expansion keeps a-‘head’ of the borough’s beer scene

by Kristen V. Brown

Brooklyn Brewery’s Steve Hindy may not be the father of craft beer in New York City, but he is certainly the cool uncle.

And now, after 23 years in brewing, the former foreign correspondent is about to expand his Williamsburg brewing complex — an announcement that couldn’t be timed more perfectly, what with New York Craft Beer Week about to pop the cork next Friday.

When Hindy’s space becomes operational in December, the brewery will be 14 times larger — able to accommodate more experimental blends as well as produce more of Hindy’s beer in Brooklyn (most is currently produced upstate).

Just as when he worked for the Associated Press, Steve Hindy knows what he’s doing. The rest of the country may be experiencing a downturn — hell, even beer sales were down two percent last year — but Hindy, and the craft beer movement of which he is at the vanguard, is certainly experiencing a boom. Craft beer sales rose seven percent last year, and Hindy’s sales were up 20 percent, he said, riding a wave of growing appreciate for fuller-flavored suds.

So Brooklyn Brewery is the ultimate 15-year overnight success — and perfectly located in a borough that has had a long history with brewing.

In the 19th century, German immigrants brought a taste for good beer to New York — and from 1870 until the 1950s, Brooklyn was one of the largest producers of beer in the country. The borough was once home to 48 breweries, but by the time Hindy and partner Tom Potter founded Brooklyn Brewery in 1987, there wasn’t a single successful commercial brewery left.

It seems odd today, but Hindy and Potter struggled in their quest to bring “good beer” to New York, as bar owners were skeptical of the full-flavored lager.

The James Clay gang, our importers in the U.K., were in town this week. Of course there was lots to talk about and good beer to taste. Coincidentally, this article in The Independent touting Clay’s success in distributing our beer also surfaced this week. Brooklyn Brewery is being recognized as a player in the reemergence of the beer scene in Great Britain.

From The Independent (UK)

by Will Hawkes

British beer is enjoying a remarkable renaissance. There are now 767 breweries in the UK, more than at any time since the Second World War. According to Camra, 78 new breweries have opened in the past 12 months (and although a fair few have closed, too, there are still 56 more now than this time last year). Last month’s Great British Beer Festival was bursting at the seams with interesting ales and happy drinkers. Beer lovers in this country have never had it so good.

Maybe, maybe not. The growing popularity of American beers in the UK suggests that things are not quite so rosy. The innovative, hop-heavy character of Yank beers is clearly filling a gap in the market, a gap that British brewers have failed to fill.

One American beer that no serious bar in the capital appears able to do without is Brooklyn Lager, which has grown hugely in popularity over the past two or three years. The man who brews it, Garrett Oliver, is a long-term friend of British brewing, having learnt to love beer over here in the early eighties – but he feels the scene on this side of the Atlantic is nothing like as exciting as it should be.

Haggblom said the oldest drinkable beer previously recorded dates from 1869.

If it was at the bottom of the sea the odds are it’s been kept pretty cold. It’s probably pretty dark down there too. And certainly no air is getting in those bottles. Could it be drinkable?

We are film fanatics. We are the beer sponsor. We are excited for BAM’s annual film festival, beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, June 9th. If you get Opening Night tickets you’ll be treated to a buzzy film AND an important-feeling afterparty featuring oodles of Brooklyn Brand beer, John C Reilly and Marisa Tomei.

Another option is emailing info@brooklynbrewery.com for a chance to win a pair of VIP passes to the 12-day festival.

Trust BrooklynBased.net to give you the scoop on this year’s BAMCinemaFEST below:

The second installment of BAMcinemaFEST returns this week with an amazing slate of shorts and features, director appearances, live music, and 16 New York premieres, even more than last year.

The Duplass Brothers’ hilarious film Cyrus, a hit at Sundance, opens the festival this Wednesday in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. It stars Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly (who will both be at the screening) as an unlikely couple whose only stumbling block is Tomei’s son Cyrus, played bySuperbad star Jonah Hill. A free after party follows, fueled by Brooklyn Brewery beer, Macallan scotch, and ton of food, all free.

That’s just one of the hot tickets in the eclectic 12-day festival. The 20 features and 16 short films emphasize up-and-coming voices like emerging director Matt Porterfield, whose acclaimed debut Hamilton was called one of the decade’s top films by The New Yorker. His follow-up, Putty Hill, which screens this Sunday June 13, is about the family and friends of a young Baltimore man who OD’s on heroin.

From Draft Magazine

We got a chance to check in with Garrett Oliver, brewmaster and vice president at Brooklyn Brewery, regarding his nomination for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional from the James Beard Foundation. Oliver is responsible for every aspect of beer production at the brewery, and obviously he’s doing something right: Over the past 20 years, he’s has won countless awards, many internationally, and published several books (including James Beard Award nominated and International Association of Culinary Professional’s Cookbook Award winner, “The Brewmaster’s Table”), serves as editor-in-chief of “The Oxford Companion to Beer,” and hosted over 600 beer tastings and beer dinners in nine countries. He was also a founding member of Slow Food USA and an international counselor to the global, grassroots organization to “counteract fast food and fast life” for five years. And in 2003, Brooklyn Brewery became the first New York company to begin to use 100 percent wind energy to operate their business. In other words, he’s been busy.”

This gentleman from the famed Appeal-Democrat has a few things to say about choosing beer over champagne this New Year’s Eve.

Raise a toast to the new year with a bubbly brew

By Joe Sixpack/For the Appeal-Democrat

Champagne? More like sham-pagne, if you ask me.

Every New Year’s Eve, it’s the same ol’ swill: overpriced bottles of sweet, fizzy wine posing as a drink worthy of celebration.

Three hundred sixty-four days of the year, none but the most pretentious palate touches the stuff. But flip the calendar, and — pop! — we’re shooting corks and slurping the bubbly like we’re Fred and Ginger in “Top Hat.”

Well, stick the cork back in.

We will discuss some basic yeast handling methods and ways to more effectively control the results of your fermentations. There will include a tasting of various beers that give typical flavor characteristics of each variety of yeast.
Founder, Steve Hindy, GM Eric Ottaway and myself took a rewarding trip down the road to the Brooklyn Navy Yards, this morning. Governor David Paterson, Borough President Marty Markowitz and a host of other government leaders were on hand to dole out $7.8 million in Downstate Revitilazation Funds to various New York City small businesses, including $800,000 for The Brooklyn Brewery.

When asked to speak, Steve said, “As a small business owner, I watched with dismay as the federal government bailed out the big banks that were ‘too big to fail’ with hundreds of billions of dollars. Small business owners wake up every morning painfully aware that they are NOT ‘too big to fail.’ We are grateful that Governor Paterson, the NY Legislature and NY Economic Development Corp are awarding this grant to the Brooklyn Brewery. We are just starting a $6.5 million expansion that will increase our brewing capacity in Brooklyn by six times. The NY stimulus money will enable us to employ some green technologies, like solar panels, that we otherwise could not afford.”

Thank you, New York!

–Ben Hudson

For the last year, Queens County Farm Director Michael Robertson has been dropping by the Brewery to pick up our spent grain to feed his animals with. He’s also been busy revitalizing the longest continually operating farm in New York. We’ve had fun collaborating with the farm on a couple events like the Fourth of July pig roast and campout. Look out for more Brooklyn Brewery events with the Queens County Farm and check out the New York Post go ga-ga for Micheal below.

From The New York Post

Hot for farmer!

City boasts bumper crop of urban agrarians

By CARLA SPARTOS

EATING local was never so appealing.

At a harvest dinner at the Queens County Farm Museum last month, several topics dominated the evening’s conversation: the quaintness of the candlelit barn, the deliciousness of the fresh-from-the-henhouse eggs and — perhaps most discussed — the hotness of the farmer responsible for all the bounty.

Meet Michael Grady Robertson — New York City farmer and the best thing to happen to the local organic movement since Whole Foods opened a beer room on Houston Street.

“He looks like Brad Pitt,” coos one young woman who’s married to a chef at a popular downtown restaurant.

Farmer Michael Grady Robertson has helped make over the Queens County Farm Museum. Since joining the Queens County Farm Museum last year, Robertson, 35, has been garnering lots of attention — and not just for his looks.

“Yes, he’s young and goodlooking and happens to be a pleasant guy that’s fun to hang out with. But he’s also interested in the history of farming [and] farming as an artisan craft,” says chef Daniel Holzman, who, along with former “Top Chef” contestant Camille Becerra, helped prepare last month’s feast showcasing citygrown grub.

Long a destination for gradeschool field-trippers from Queens and Long Island, the Queens County Farm Museum has been attracting a whole new demographic under Robertson’s watch thanks to sold-out harvest dinners, weekend cookouts and a Friday farm stand at the Union Square Greenmarket. (There’s also an on-premises farm stand selling eggs, produce and pork, open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. through Oct. 31.)

“It’s really exciting to tell people about what we do out here,” says Robertson, who has been instrumental in transforming what was once a slightly hokey museum into a bona fide working farm with major plans for expansion. “There’s still a pretty big part of the population in the city that doesn’t know what we do — that we have livestock, an organic vegetable garden and that we’re a part of the community.”

Seriously, who’d have guessed there was such a lovely green oasis tucked among the condo developments of Floral Park?

“He seems to be putting them on the map for a lot of people [but] it also could just be the zeitgeist. Local food and urban farming is all the rage . . . He probably comes at a very good moment,” says Ben Hudson, marketing manager of Brooklyn Brewery, which has partnered with the farm for events like a Labor Day weekend campout complete with kegs and chicken barbecue. (The brewery also supplies the farm’s heritage pigs with spent brew grains to eat.)

In other words, if it seems like a stretch to have a farmer in NewYork, it’s not.

Slowly but surely we’ve been expanding our sales in Chicagoland. Distribution that started with our Brooklyn Lager in 2006 has now expanded to include all of our core styles in addition to some seasonal and now, our Big Bottles. Jerald O’Kennard just put up a complimentary review of our Belgian-inspired Local 2.

See?

From Chicago Tribune

What makes it special: Now that we are firmly into autumn, foods are getting richer, and your beer should follow suit. Styled after dark Belgian ale, this domestic craft beer from Brooklyn Brewery in New York is made with European malts and hops, brown sugar, wildflower honey and orange zest. It is bottled in an impressively sculpted, Champagne-like cork-and-wire-cage-adorned 750-milliliter bottle and packs an 8 percent alcohol wallop. Belgian-style ales are meant to savor and share. The Local 2 goes great with roasted vegetables and seasonal braised game. It’s available year-round, but this is the season that it shines the brightest.

In the glass: Deep reddish mahogany color with a tan head. Aromas of caramel on buttered dark toast, honey and orange peel follow through on a round, foamy entry to a fruity yet dry, medium to full body with tangy apple skin, dried citrus and toffee notes. Finishes with a nice, grassy hop and pepper-accented fade. A rock solid food beer.

Where to buy it: In stores such as Armanetti Beverage Mart and The Noble Grape in Chicago ($10-$10.50 a bottle). In bars, Rocking Horse and The Map Room in Chicago ($12).

By Garrett Oliver

As much as we all love summer, fall is probably the greatest season for food. The vegetable harvests are coming in, the seafood is at its peak, and we can finally turn the oven on again. Brewers have always loved the fall season, and they still mark the barley and hop harvests with Oktoberfest celebrations from Bavaria to Brazil. Only twenty years ago, most American beer was pretty bland, but fortunately things have changed for the better. Just as our supermarkets are showing us a new cornucopia of flavors, traditional craft breweries are making a wide array of beers to match. We’re used to thinking of wine seasonally—many of us drink more white wine in the warmer months, and then trend toward reds as the weather gets cooler. We can think of beers in the same way, but craft beers have an even wider range of flavor than wine, so we can really have some fun with them. Today, craft brewers see autumn as a great time to feature beers with more robust flavors, beers with enough character and warmth to pair with comfort foods.

Way back in 2003 we started exporting Brooklyn brand beers to Japan. Our friends of the rising sun have been lapping it up ever since. Over the weekend Brooklyn Parlor, an NY-themed restaurant, bar and music venue, opened in Tokyo. The Japan-based beer blog, Hopjuice took a visit and reviewed the joint here.

Brooklyn Parlor’s website is pretty cool too. Check out that photo of Bedford and 5th!

Not Bud, Not Miller, none of that mass-produced bland lager that dominates weekend TV with its ads. I’m talking about beers from around the world, and beers from the ever-expanding list of American microbreweries, some of which produce the finest beers you’ll ever have the pleasure of tasting.

On an idyllic Saturday afternoon, one of the last days of summer, we hosted 20 lovely mermaids at a barbecue in my backyard in Brooklyn. Many racks of ribs were consumed and a keg was kicked.

For the last three years, these creative beauties have represented the brewery in Coney Island Present’s MERMAID PARADE.

The brewery is proud to contribute to Dick Zigun’s annual production, one of Brooklyn’s finest festivals and probably the closest you get to a Mardi Gras scene in New York City. (Right up there with the West Indian Day Parade and the Halloween Parade in the Village.)

I’ll kick things off in my home town. Located in a former matzo ball factory in Brooklyn’s trendy Williamsburg neighborhood, Brooklyn Brewery has received numerous awards and keg-sized quantities of critical praise. Brewmaster Garrett Oliver consistently concocts some of America’s finest beers and his interpretation of the traditional Bavarian Oktoberfest lager is up to his usual standards. With a deep, reddish amber color and plenty of rich malt and caramel flavor, this full-bodied seasonal brew is the perfect way to welcome the cold.

We just about lost it when we heard Brooklyn Brewery brew master Garrett Oliver was working on a beer made from Benton’s Country Smokehouse bacon, and now it’s a reality. The catch is: You’ll have to pay $350 for a taste of Reinschweinsgebot, as Oliver is calling it. The beer is part of a pairing dinner at Per Se on September 18 at 7 p.m. (the first of its kind there), which will also feature the Manhattan Project, a rye-based beer made with David Wondrich that’s aged in Rittenhouse Rye barrels and flavored with herbs, spices, and cherry so as to echo the taste of a Manhattan. The Manhattan Project is going out to bars in New York and across 21 states this week (it’s currently on tap at Rattle & Hum), and Oliver is quite pleased with it: “It tells me that we got it right that several bartenders I’ve served it to smelled the beer and just burst out laughing.” Since he’s also pleased with the bacon beer, will it too become commercially available?

The Brooklyn Brewery was presenting sponsor of this year’s Transportation Alternatives’ Century Ride on September 13. This was the 20th anniversary of the ride, which begins at the north end of Central Park and winds through all New York’s five boroughs before returning to the park.
I am on the TA Board and I rode in the event with my wife Ellen and daughter Lily. Ellen and I rode only 15 miles because we had tickets for the US Open Women’s final on September 13. (OK so we’re wimps.) Lily and her friends rode 55 miles.
Brooklyn brewer Dan Peterson, his sister and brother-in-law rode the full 100 miles. On Tuesday morning, Dan said he was still medicated with Advil.
Transportation Alternatives is an advocacy organization that promotes bicycling, walking and other alternatives to internal combustion locomotion in the New York metropolitan area.
This year’s Century Ride drew 5,500 riders. There are 185,000 bicyclists in New York City today. At the first Century Ride in 1990, there were 400 riders. At that time, New York had 53,000 bicyclists.
We all were outdone by Brooklyn Brewery General Manager Eric Ottaway during the Braking The Cycle ride. He rode 100 miles on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in bicycling from Boston to New York—a total of 300 miles. That ride raises money for AIDS research.

Blogger Robert Simonson, of Off The Presses, stopped by The Brewery and got the scoop on a couple of upcoming specialty beers from the Brewmaster…

Last week, I took Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver up on a long-standing invitation to tour the Williamsburg brewery.

I chose a good time to visit. As many have read recently, Oliver—inspired by the bartender Don Lee’s bacon-infused bourbon Manhattan at PDT—is in the process of trying a create a bacon-infused beer. Like Lee, he is employing the ballyhooed bacon of Allan Benton. So, when I arrived, the entire brewery on 11th Street smelled of breakfast. Oliver allowed me a whiff of the special, smokey-smelling malt he’s using for the beer, as well as the Benton’s derived bacon fat, explaining that the two, put together, will create the illusion of bacon.

I’m hoping to tasted some of this Frankenstein creation when it’s ready, but that may be a long shot. Oliver explained that he’s only making 25 cases and it won’t likely be made available to the consumer.

But, that’s OK. Oliver is constantly inventing new potions, and many are available to the thirsty masses. The rate of creation is due mainly to the Brewmaster’s Reserve series. Oliver comes up with a new beer every two months (that’s six times a year), which is released in limited qualities in keg form and available at select bars.

Oliver is apparently currently obsessed with making beers taste like things that they are not, because the next Brewmaster’s Reserve, called The Manhattan Project and due out on Sept. 15, is being made to taste like a Manhattan Cocktail.

Let’s say that again. It’s a beer that tastes like a Manhattan Cocktail.

Oliver said this is the first time he’s used a cocktail (his favorite cocktail, FYI) as a model for a beer. (Cocktail expert David Wondrich is providing some counsel and advice.) Here’s the plan. Thirty percent of the mash will be rye. Thirty percent of the beer will be aged in rye barrels from Rittenhouse. The wash will also be infused with a variety of herbs commonly found in vermouth. Also, some cherry juice many be involved in there somewhere.eries. Oliver comes up with a new beer every two months (that’s six times a year), which is released in limited qualities in keg form and available at select bars.
