Gold Standard is available May-July 2012, draft only.

Brooklyn Gold Standard Export Kellerbier is here to channel those days when the land was green with beer gardens, and no one had yet uttered the P-word*. The title “Export” connotes a beer more robust than pilsner, while the word “Kellerbier” tells us that it’s unfiltered. Our malt is 100% floor-malted Bohemian barley, giving the beer a rich bready backbone. And Brooklyn Gold Standard is going to need a solid backbone to hold up all those snappy German Hallertau Perle, Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Czech Saaz hops that are leaping out of the glass. A long, cold lager fermentation makes it rich, but smooth. The big floral hop aroma is followed by refreshingly bold bitterness and beautiful rounded malt flavors.

[*Prohibition. Utter it not, allow it never.]

Food Pairings: Spicy foods, fresh cheeses, burgers, oysters
Malts: Bohemian Hanka, 100% Floormalted, Czech Republic
Hops: Hallertau Perle and Hallertau Mittelfrueh (Germany), Saaz (Czech Republic)
Yeast: A proprietary lager strain, lent to us by our awesome pals at New Glarus Brewing of Wisconsin
O.G.: 14.6° Plato
IBUs: 44.5
ABV: 6.2%
Format: 15.5 gal kegs; 5.2 gal kegs
Availabilty: April-July
Serving Suggestions: Serve at 40 – 45° in a tall glass with at least “two fingers” of foam

You’re probably like “What? Did I read that right?”. Don’t worry, you did. Good job! Claire, our extraordinaire Export Coordinator, will explain:

Friday nights at the Brooklyn Brewery are typically full of good times and great people but recently we had some very special visitors. An a’cappella Choir of 24 girls from Iceland called Graduale Nobili (@gradualenobili) who just so happen to be on tour with Bjork, offered to sing us a few songs in exchange for beer and pizza. Harmoniously and flawlessly they sang their National Anthem, their impressive rendition of the Flight of the Bumble Bee, and an upbeat song that translates to a man in red destroying a village with his scythe. They were even kind enough to humor us by singing the anthem of our cask beer club, The Legion of Osiris. It was an honor that they decided to spend their night off from Bjork’s Biophilia tour with us.

Watch as Graduale Nobili graciously supports us on The Anthem of The Legion of Osiris, followed by a performance of “Raudi Riddarinn (The Red Knight)”. Below the video are the song’s upbeat, sunny lyrics.

No one is so solitary that he cannot expect a visitor, a horseman all in red riding a pale steed
A horseman all in red wielding a reeking scythe gallops so the clatter of hooves resounds around the world
Swirling up dust that darkens the world of men and spatters on the windows
The horseman forces his way into the house and his sickle drips with blood

Mary’s Maple Porter is available February-April 2012, draft only.

It’s true….when he was a kid, Garret used to actually believe that the stuff he was putting on his pancakes was maple syrup. Well, everybody called it maple syrup. Later, he discovered the truth – that stuff he was eating was just sugar syrup with “maple flavoring”, various gums, and caramel coloring. Then he discovered actual maple syrup, the stuff from trees, and became enlightened. Hey, everyone evolves.

Brooklyn Brewery has evolved a lot lately too. About a year ago, a brewer named Mary Wiles joined our brewery team after spending 30 years brewing and doing quality control for a Very, Very Big Brewer. Mary evolved into a craft beer brewer, and now she’s doing our quality control, having fun while helping us make sure that Brooklyn beers are tasting great and ready to make you happy. But Mary has a bright thing lurking in her past, present and future – Mary has maple trees. A lot of maple trees. Actually, a ridiculous number of maple trees, acres of them, right northwest of us in upstate New York. And her family farm makes 100% real New York State maple syrup.

Real maple syrup tastes great on pancakes and waffles, but it’s awfully good in beer too. Porter is a classic British ale style that traveled to the United States, sustained George Washington during the Revolution, and later built London’s great breweries. Mary’s Maple Porter is a rich, dark ale featuring a large portion (50 gallons!) of her maple syrup in the kettle. After fermentation by our house ale yeast, the syrup is no longer sweet (yeast likes to eat maple syrup too), but the maple flavor shows through in a complex interplay with caramel, chocolate, and coffee flavors from our blend of roasted malts. An earthy hop note rounds it all out. It’s really tasty, especially with bacon.

Typical.

On the bright side, it’s given me more of a chance to watch the lovely, lovely video below (thanks, Gothamist) portraying an unfortunate doggy dance troupe shamefully swaying and flapping their shaggy limbs under the direction of a man wearing a helmet made of human hair. Is it really worth that rancid milk bone your trainer is dangling behind the cameraman, guys?

[Yet another GABF t-shirt spotted.]

The Internet has been talking a lot lately about the Great American Beer Festival. So have the people here who are flying out to Denver, especially you know who. Don’t worry — my good and considerate coworkers got me a ticket months ago… is what I’d be saying if they weren’t a bunch of beer swilling slackers. Do they not realize how well a cat would get along with a crowd of of 49,000 people?

Because life has a funny, funny way of helping you out, I came across a very important news video of a pussy named Willow who made her way from Colorado to New York City. All I need to do is reverse that and I’ll be sipping Local 1, Local 2, Sorachi Ace, The Concoction and a barrel-aged stout Garrett told me I’d be fed to dogs if I mentioned beside the cool serenity of the Rocky Mountains.

The rent’s too damn high © here anyway.

From March-July of 2011, Brooklyn Brewery and The Food Experiments traveled to Austin, New Orleans, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Boston to crown five amateur cook-off aces. In September, these culinary masterminds journey to Brooklyn to compete in The National Championship against a selection of the borough’s All-Stars.

Check back all this week leading up to the big event for Experimental Profiles in Courage on the contestants.

[Austin, TX champs The Holy Smokers.]

Who are these Holy Smokers? The Holy Smokers are two small town pastors and suburban dads that know how to bring the joy “BIG TIME”. As in life and in cooking the Holy Smokers fully embrace experiments. In trying new and adventurous things they are never satisfied until they get to lead others into what they believe to be a Holy Moment. In pursuit of love, joy, and community, the Holy Smokers bring a next level of excitement wherever they are.

What was the Holy Smokers’ favorite Experimental Moment? The most memorable moment was when Holy Smoker, Evans, celebrated his victory with a Chameleon Cold-Brew Shower!

[I brought this on myself.]

Oh, how far I have fallen. Just two weeks ago I was on top of the world, making some serious professional strides, and now I’m just another cat with stuff on it.

[I did bad.]

Over the holiday weekend — when everyone ditched me — I came across a really nice Web Site called Animals Being Dicks. As advertised, the page features little motivational movies of cats, dogs, horses, monkeys, birds and dolphins generally being jerks. And never have I been so inspired. When I woke up the next day chairs were shredded, toilet paper torn, beer taps running, malt bags gutted, merchandise defiled, and fermenting tank #12 irrevocably out of service.

After a failed attempt at blaming Garrett, I feigned the above pose and all of a sudden I’m being pet, with treats, once again, in my mouth. Suckers.

Kids these days! Frightened by the littlest things. Take the tyke in this YouTube.com movie, for instance. Scared of a tennis ball? It’s not even moving. Nor is it even alive for Peat-malt’s sake. When I was young I fought a raccoon down on Wythe Ave & Metropolitan in the middle of traffic, during a blizzard, with a head cold. And since that day all raccoons everywhere have black eyes.

Those wild days are over, though. Now I just take naps, seduce people for food and lavish attention from hordes of fans.

[Thinking about my Dad.]

No one wants me to get all sappy — I know this better than any cat. But, this website movie reminded me of my hardscrabble origins on the mean streets of Millenium-era Williamsburg. It’s true that I’m an orphan in the technical sense: my mother passed when I was but a kitten and hell, haven’t heard from pop since around the same time. But you’d be a lying dog if you were to say that I didn’t have a family. The brewers, accountants, marketeers and visitors of The Brooklyn Brewery are my family. Think about growing yours with an adopted street animal today. Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll be as magnificent as I am.

Asbury Park, NJ 07712

From Metromix:

“If you’re a local fan of independent art, this very well may be the coolest news you’ve read in quite a while: TromaDance is coming back to Asbury Park. It was recently announced that the 12th annual TromaDance Film Festival will be coming to town on April 22 and 23. After 10 years in Park City, Utah – the town which also plays host to the Sundance Film Festival – TromaDance moved to Asbury Park last year.”

And Brooklyn Brewery is a proud sponsor. Join us for the films, and be sure to stay for the after party at Asbury Lanes on Saturday, April 23 at 10pm, featuring the band Psychocharger.

Read more about TromaDance here, here, or just watch this motion picture!

[Wide awake.]

The Internet is an exhausting place. I read a report that there are over 180 million websites spanning the Web, and more than half of them have to do with cats. Just not enough time in the day to cram it all in.

No one here ever feeds me milk. And the office people continuously claim that “milk isn’t healthy for cats”, then get right back to ruining their eyesight by staring at their computer screens all day. And they never share any of their left over food either, but I do a fine job of sneaking nibbles in the Tasting Room (I’ve had this event on my cat-lendar for weeks), even without the wallet for paw prosthetics like these wannabe-human house cats:

[I'm looking down at you.]

It’s only taken two years, and they’ve finally allowed me to contribute to the blog. I attribute it solely to jealousy over my popularity on Facebook, but whatever.

In my first post I’d like to introduce everyone to two really awesome websites I found: Google.com and YouTube.com. Both are highly recommended, and the people here seem to like them too. Apparently the Internet is good for very few things, watching cat videos being high up on that short list.

Much like my distaste for west coast beers is my distaste for western kitties. They’re unkempt ruffians with no sense of decorum. Watch this and surely you’ll agree:

CNN, and The Brooklyn Brewery, would love for you to “watch in the weeks to come as Hindy joins our Michael Wu, CEO of Maxim’s Group in Hong Kong, and Sarah Curran, CEO of my-wardrobe.com in London, as part of our yearlong, in-depth look at what it’s like to be ‘The Boss.’”

…And lived to tell about it in this here video. They were one team amongst 23 Austin amateur chefs that gave it their all at the first of Brooklyn Brewery’s Presented Food Experiment Tour. Nick Suarez and Theo Peck of The Food Experiments pulled off a funtastic party at Club DeVille on Sunday. The Austin chefs really set the bar high, with totally impressive cooking. They wore costumes, they took vows, they brought rubber pig snouts. We had a rambunctious crowd of Brooklyn Lager enjoyers and food devourers. A good time was had by all. Even celebrity judge Abbie Broyles said so.

Also a big thanks goes out to DJ Jester The Filipino Fist. As Theo said, “He’s Filipino and he has a fist.” ‘Nuff said.

From Theo at thefoodexperiments.com:

The Austin chefs brought it! They did not mess around. They had an incredible familiarity with swine. The cooks created dishes that were as diverse as the city of Austin. Thank you to all! We had a blast at the Pitchork #Offline showcases on Thursday and Friday at East Side Drive In, and TV on The Radio, Okkervil River, The Dodos and OFF! were just a few of the great performances we witnessed across in Austin (not to mention a surprise appearance by LL Cool J); musicians from around the world played dozens of genres from venues including bars, clubs, alleyways, parking lots, backyards, fields and the city’s sidewalks. We ate deep fried bacon wrapped pickles, pulled pork sliders with fried onions, Canadian bacon jalapeño-jelly donuts, and frightening amounts of smoked meat off the bone. We drank and shared a great slew of Brooklyn Lager and EIPA, and were introduced to some fantastic local breweries including the (512) Brewing Company and Real Ale Brewing Company. All of this is to say SxSW 2011 was a great success.

Speaking of winning, Austinite Elizabeth Meador was the winner of a brand new, beautifully crafted Brooklyn Brewery skateboard by Bustin Boards at the Friday Pitchfork #Offline show. Cheers, Liz!

Do NOT try this at home. Well, on second thought, if you actually own a saber, why not: go for it! Just dial 9, then 1, and then slice away with your partner’s finger hovering over the other 1.

And on this bright note, in the afternoon Darren Rovell of CNBC interviewed Hindy about the rise of the overall craft beer business. See below for photos (by Heather Gallagher) and video from CNBC:

Big thanks to homebrew all-stars Chris Cuzme and Morgan Wright for digging up this gem from the ancient, grimy vault that is early Kurt Loder era MTV. Can you believe they took a break from Madonna and Whitesnake to feature the NYC homebrewing community?

With the handlebar moustaches, suspenders, and oversized spectacles, it’s hard to tell if this is 1989 or 2007. But potentially more amusing is some exceedingly rare footage of young Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, back when he worked at the now defunct Manhattan Brewing, sported a killer moustache and flattop, and double fisted homebrews (although we haven’t seen it, we’re unable to verify the latter doesn’t still occur).

Enjoy!

Thanks guys. But could we improve our internet engagement?

Probably not.

But who knows. Hundreds of “digital agencies”, “web strategists”, “internet gurus” and “full service marketing service providers” contact us every week, pitching pie-in-the-sky business trajectories for a “few k” a year. Most are photoshopped versions of sending a resume taped to the top of a pizza box in the hopes of getting an interview. But every now and then one sticks out. Like this one from BajillionHits.Biz.
