In Class at the CIA: Keeping Up With The Collaborations


The brewhouse of The Brooklyn Brewery at The CIA is always humming with activity. Head Brewer Hutch Kugeman spends plenty of time with his students every week, but there’s also plenty of time to do some fiddling around on the brewing system. When you add in the fact that Hutch has brewed all over New York State, any good beer geek knows what comes next: collaborations!

Hutch has hosted several of his old companions on campus, and has traveled to some of their facilities to put together new and exciting beers. Many of these are only available on the campus restaurants of the CIA, so now you have even more reason to visit.


Hutch gave us a rundown on some of his latest projects:

SMaSH Stout – Collaboration with Indian Ladder Farmstead Brewery & Cidery (Altamont, NY) and C.H. Evans Brewing (Albany, NY). 6.0% chocolate and orange stout brewed with 2-row barley grown at Indian Ladder Farmstead and malted by Hudson Valley Malt, as well as hops grown at ILF. We dry hopped with cocoa nibs and used tangerine and blood orange puree in the kettle. It’s a nicely balanced stout; the chocolate and citrus are noticeable, but not strong.

West Meets East Pilsner – Collaboration with Community Beer Works (Buffalo, NY) brewed here on campus. Traditional 4.5% ABV pilsner brewed with a portion of the malt grown in western NY and malted by Niagara Malting, and hopped with Hallertauer Blanc and Czech Saaz.

East Meet West IPL – Collab with Community Beer Works brewed at their brewery in Buffalo. Hoppy pilsner brewed with a portion of the malt grown in Orange County and malted by Hudson Valley Malt, and hopped with Azacca, Citra and Magnum. This beer is still in fermentation at CBW.

Froot Boot Pale – Collab with C.H. Evans Brewing (Albany). Pale Ale brewed with Citra and Mosaic hops with Yuzu and Kalamensi puree. This beer is still in fermentation at C.H. Evans.

The next time you’re in the Hudson Valley, stop by and say hello to Hutch. You might meet someone surprising working the kettles with him, and you’ll definitely get to try to some excellent beer.
